A Busy Little Group!
Yalenka Ukrainian Cultural Society has been in Prince George, British Columbia, for over 30 years, offering a wide range of Ukrainian cultural activities to local Ukrainians and non-Ukrainians alike. The cultural activities share the culture, language, art, dance, clothing, and culinary traditions of Ukraine. These include the artistic, culinary and dance traditions that are celebrated throughout the year in both Ukraine and Canada. Ukrainian New Years is celebrated annually with our Malanka Celebrations in January, and the Easter season is celebrated with colourful pysanky decorating. Membership with Yalenka is open to all members of the community.
Why join Yalenka Ukrainian Dancers?
We have a lot to offer... for a reasonable price. Everyone is welcome! No previous dance experience is required and you don’t even have to be Ukrainian... you just have to love to dance. Costumes are either provided by the club or can be purchased. No hand embroidery required. There are beautiful club costumes for all dancers.
The family membership allows you and your family to participate in our cultural and fun activities throughout the year. We host a traditional Ukrainian Christmas Eve supper (On January 6) and hold Ukrainian Easter Egg classes before Easter. You will be able to purchase tickets to our annual sold-out Malanka (Ukrainian New Year’s Dance) before they go on sale to the general public.
Dance classes run both Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from September to June, culminating with our annual Vesna (Spring) Concert in May. The Yalenka dance club is made up of four age levels. We encourage kids at any age (beginning at age three), and even adults, to come and try Ukrainian dance. Our dances, choreographed by local instructors showcase the differences between different regions in Ukraine, highlighting clothing and dance technique variations. To enhance our dancers technique, we also follow a ballet syllabus in every level. All dancers perform around Prince George at various events including the Festival of Trees, UNBC Timberwolves half-time shows and Canada Day in the Park. Additionally, the senior dance group travels out-of-town to performances, festivals and competitions. In the past we have performed at the Prince Rupert Malanka Celebrations, Grand Prairie Vitaemo Festival, BC Ukrainian Cultural Festival, Vegreville Pysanka Festival, and Okanagan Ukrainian Festival, just to name a few.
If you are interested, come down to the Yalenka Hall (933 Patricia Blvd) on Wednesday evenings and check us out. Registration starts again in September
